IC Worlds 2024.

Lubecker Yacht Club, Travemünde, Germany

Day One. Breeze.

After launching for a midday start conditions quickly escalated with gusts close to 30 knots and with a severe sea state the fleet was eventually sent back ashore and the long waiting game started.

After numerous delays a diminished fleet lined up for a 17:00 start. Chris Hampe charged across the line on port chased by Glen Truswell with the leading American contenders, David Clark and Michael Costello leading the main bunch of starboard tack boats to the left.

Clark led Hampe around the windward mark with the top four all close for the first triangle.

Meanwhile in the pack places were changing as each mistake and capsize reshuffled the order. Ole Jungle closed up the gap to those ahead, while among the IC one designs Simon Hipkin led Stephen Fleming and Torsten Marquardt.

At the end of the sausage leg the Americans were first and second but celebrated too early, mistakenly thinking they had finished. By the final gybe mark on the second and final triangle Costello narrowly managed to hold out Glen Truswell, but Clark slipped back to fourth behind Hampe and despite closing up the positions would hold to the finish line.

Day Two, much waiting around.

Only two races were sailed despite all boats being on the water for over six hours. With the wind starting from the south west lighter winds and flatter conditions saw some new faces towards the front of the fleet with Mike Fenwick scoring two third places, Ole Junge two fourths and Alistair Warren two fifth place finishes. Both races were won by Glen Truswell from Mike Costello who had a close tussle throughout the race.

Day Three. Breeze Again.

The forecast was for a north westerly that would be strong, but not as fierce as the first day.

On reaching the start area the fleet was meet with marginally better conditions than day one. After a slight delay the fleet was away, all on starboard tack, and those who quickly headed to the right were in the leading pack at the first mark.

The first two laps followed the current form book. Glen Truswell led from Michael Costello until Costello found some good shifts up the final beat to charge away for the win on the final downwind legs. Glen would have an easier win in the second race of the day as Costello had to fight through the fleet again.

The third and final race of the day went down to the final short beat to the finish line. Costello had taken the lead at the final windward mark and the two boats were overlapped as they rounded the final mark of the race. Glen sailed around the American to just take the win and lead the series by 8 points to 10 at the half way stage.

For the rest of the fleet the top ten tightened up with German Peter Ullmann and Alistair Warren and Dan Skinner from the UK all taking a jump up the standings. The one design fleet continued to be led by Simon Hipkin from Torsten Marquardt, ahead of Steve Fleming.

Day Four. New York Canoe Club Challenge Cup.

See This page.

Day Five. NYCCCC final race

After the conclusion of the New York Challenge Cup the fleet lined up for three races that would see the second discard of the event come in to play. Alistair Warren continued his good form to move up to fourth overall with a 7, 5, 5 scoreline. David Clark from the US team had a good day to move up to sixth. At the top of the fleet the leaders consolidated their places; Mike Fenwick with three third place finishes, Michael Costello with three second places and Glen Truswell with three wins.

Final Day - Unsailable.

In the event, high pressure led to a windless day on 27 July and after several postponements and no change in the conditions, the final races were cancelled.

The overall results for the World Championship are:

1st Gold - Glen Truswell GBR

2nd Silver - Michael Costello USA

3rd Bronze - Michael Fenwick GBR
