Europa Cup 2004
Thirty-five International canoes from Britain, Sweden and Germany contested the British nationals and the Europa Cup at Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy from July 31st - August 6th.
The first day's racing on the Sunday saw winds reaching Force 4. Goodchild and Ellis enjoyed a close battle at the front of the ICs, but Caldwell took line honours when these pair continued their battle the wrong side of the finish line. Wood won convincingly in the AC fleet.
Racing was postponed by Frank Newton for the day on the Monday due to strong winds, a decision vindicated as the fleet enjoyed excellent sea breezes for the rest of the week. Goodchild, Caldwell, Ellis and Brown all took turns to lead the fleet of ICs. In fact, Brown enjoyed leading race too in his brand new boat so much that he decided not to finish the race and continue on a lap of honour! Robin took advantage and secured a bullet. Wood, Allen and James were all close in the ACs throughout the week.
The Sailing Challenge Trophy, one of the oldest sailing trophies in the world and dating from 1875, was sailed for on the Friday. This race must be of at least l5 miles in length, and was held in a good Force 3. A large figure of eight course was set visiting the four corners of Portland harbour. Having won the AC European championship, Wood decided not to sail and James took advantage to secure victory. Racing was tight throughout, but after three hours sailing Caldwell took line honours from Ellis and Goodchild in the IC fleet.
