Int Canoe Nationals and Europa Cup 1992

The Clyde Canoe Club hosted the International Canoe Europa Cup on Loch Lomond from August 8th - 14th. The event was sponsored by Glengoyne Whisky which ensured that the record numbers were kept in high spirits. A total of 58 entries with a good contingent of foreign visitors from |Germany, Sweden and the Cayman Islands enjoyed a rather mixed week of weather and a very high level of competitive sailing.

The first race was scheduled for the Sunday, but lack of wind combined with heavy rain meant that two races were sailed on the Monday. Mark Goodchild from Medway YC, the defending champion, opened his account in fine style with two wins. These results also ensured that he retained the classic Sailing Challenge Trophy. Lee Noble from Ullswater SC was second in race 1 and David Hullin from Germany was second in race 2.

The Novices race on Tuesday morning was sailed in the lightest of airs and was won in convincing style by Lars-Ove Andersson of Sweden from Chris Masters and Peter MacLaren.

The afternoon race for the Camplain Cup was won by Barthellsson from Sweden. He beat his compatriot Anders Pettersson and the steadily improving David Hullin.

After a fine breeze on Wednesday morning the wind died away. The Eric Freeman Trophy race had to be stopped after the first beat turned into dead run. After two further attempts to restart the race was re-scheduled for the next day.

The two races on Thursday were sailed in ideal conditions with a steady north-westerly force3-4 and were both won by Hullin with Goodchild finishing second in both.

The final day's racing started in a Force 2-3 following a lengthy postponement. Pettersson won the race in emphatic style with a final lead of nearly a beat. Goodchild was second and Noble 3rd. Hullin's 4th place was enough to wrest the Europa Cup by a mere 0.25 points. The UK Open Championship, the Quincy Cup, was won by Goodchild.

The idyllic setting and the unrivalled hospitality of the host club and the sponsors meant that all the competitors had an excellent week.

Editor's Note: The full results, from the Sept 1992 Canoe Newsletter, appear to have some odd features. Why would one give 59 points for DNC, DNF etc in a series which seems only to have 53 entrants? Also, because I put the results through a modern scoring program to get the totals, which do not appear on the original, the odd error from changes in scoring practice (ties and the like) is possible. The order of competitors shown in the original list, which is reflected in the places on the table, is not 100% consistent with my calculated points totals either. Thee inconsistencies only seem to appear in the lowest quarter of the placings. It is, I suppose, not completely impossible there were errors in either the original scoring or the transcription to the newsletter I was working from.
