South West - Winter sailing series

Hi All,

Not sure if anyone would be up for this, but there is an interesting series of longish 'bit of a challenge' races over the winter down here in the warm and sunny South West

A few established events filled out with a bundle of smaller events from Penzance to Portishead, starting next weekend in Plymouth and going on to next April in Torbay. Most are longish pursuit races over one day.

I am not sure how many I will do, but a few for sure. I am sure Chris Hampe will have his eyes on a few too.

The first is a two day event in Plymouth: The Final Fling. A race with many years of local tradition behind it.

I hope to go as long as I can kick a nasty cold I have. I presume Chris will be there.

I am sure we can offer a good welcome to any ICs who can face the drive down here.

Never sailed Wimbleball.... but I reckon Sutton Bingham is most probably smaller....

And Portishead, well an old haunt of mine, but gosh, not sure I will have the guts for that one. Depends what the tide is doing I guess, but can have a pretty wicked chop at times.

I'm planning to be at Plymouth this weekend. Weather looks good.

Chris is going I believe. What about the rest of the Devon and Cornwall boys then; Roger, Ed, Rob and of course the Castle Cove team are pretty close.....

Portishead is close to me but Severn Estuary in February sounds a bit brutal. See what the weather's like I suppose.

Plymouth, and associate events around there is something like a 233 mile journey for me - so I do not think I will be making the effort to attend. Sorry.

Guys,

I'm dropping my boat off at QAB tonight fairly late. Does anyone know if we can leave boats in the carpark or do we need to put them on the slip way. Do we need to inform them first?

4 of us turned up to this and it was a really good event and was a great way of showing the boats to the dinghy public. Its probably the only really effective way of marketing the class actually showing what the boats can do and generating interest. Whole range of boats from Toppers to Formula 17 Cats which made interesting racing.

Breeze a bit light on the Saturday but on flattish water, huge sailing area which must be at least 10 square miles with steady breeze. Should add to the secondary events for next year.

Next event in the series is tomorrow....at North Devon Yacht Club.

Hopefully we will have Chris Hampe and myself.

Would be lovely to see any others.
