K220 - any details?
K220 - any details?
Hello
I've recently bought K220 which has been laid up in a shed for most of the last decade. She is a late cold moulded wood boat and is still in great condition overall, although the rig does need some work. Ed Bremner informs me she was originally named Final Fling and was built in 1990 by Peter Herbert - can anyone give me any more details of her history?
Thanks in advance

I can't help very much but I can confirm that K220 'Final Fling' was build by Peter Herbert in 1990, according to my records.

Thanks Tony. Her fit out is a bit dated but she does seem very nicely finished, did Peter Herbert build many boats?

I think he built 2 or 3... from memory.

Peter built a number of Canoes including the first one I owned, back in 1973. That was K117, a Proctor design built before the Nethercott was adopted as a one-design.

My records show that Peter H built 115 "Culos Ariba", 148 "Daddy Long Arms" (my first IC), 160 "Running Wild" and 220 "Final Fling". He used to fit a place in his canoes under toe foredeck for a paddle.

Consensus on Torment K102 was that I have an "Avalon" hull though there was suggestion of another builder. I am sure I was told the boat was built from a moulded hull and finished of by the owner, (Name John Childe I think)
What is interesting is that I too have a paddle that was housed in a specially designed holder under my foredeck. The Paddle handle used to have a square (I presume identity tag) plaque tacked onto the handle which has gone AWOL, (possibly somewhere inside the hull.)
When I first took Torment out I discovered the paddle could also escape from its mounting and go walkabout inside the hull. It was a happy hour of fun retrieving it. (A bit like getting a patient to roll around in a CT Scanner during a "Virtual Colonoscopy!")
On which joyful thought...

More than happy to take your word for this....(A bit like getting a patient to roll around in a CT Scanner during a "Virtual Colonoscopy!")
Paddles are useful, but not just for paddling. If you break your rudder and you can stick a paddle down the cassette hole, when rudderless sailing, your opinion of the IC goes from being 'a total pig with a mind of its own' to 'look how bloody smooth I am'...

Re: K220 - any details?
Thanks guys.
I'm fairly sure K220 doesn't have a space under the foredeck for a paddle, but I'll have to take a closer look.
The first tasks are to sort out a trolley and replace some of the fittings on the mast, but otherwise she shouldn't need much work. That said, I am thinking of stripping the hull and revarnishing over the Winter - should look stunning
