Mast stiffness
Can anyone advise me on the effect of mast stiffness, if I change from a hog stepped mast with the gooseneck mounted about 400mm from its heel to a decked stepped mast ( on a USA stump?) with the boom mounted on that stump. Will the mast appear and react as if it was stiffer or remain the same? What...

Re: Measurement Practice
Continued............. Any difference in measuring methods and possible interpretations should be considered at the skippers meeting at the Worlds in September. Then if necessary the ICF can draw up any proposed rule changes or issue instructions to measurers to clarify the position to ensure that th...

Re: Measurement Practice
As the Uk Chief Measurer, it may assist if I clarify how the rule is interpreted in the UK. The intention of Rule 5e ( the two tapes etc.) was to check the hull and prevent any hull 'bumping' or similar distortions so as to produce a narrow/thinner or similar hull. In the UK we now have at least 5 d...

Leeward jib sheeting and cleats
I am looking to move away from my self tacker and back to leeward jib sheeting . Now its 10 years since I last sailed with normal jib sheeting, so I would like to know: The angle of the leeward cleat, where does the top of it point to? Is it the opposite gunwhale, top of seat carriage etc. This info...

Re: Tacking in strong winds....top tips, please
I would add to the discussion: Max cunningham, little kicker, do not be in a hurry to push the seat out on to the new tack as if it touches the water on the new side it will kill / stop the boat, finally, sheet jib in on new tack asap or back jib on old tack and DO NOT be to fast on sheeting in the ...

Re: Richmond YC XIX World Championships 2014 USA
Hi Del, 1 or up to 2 races a day will be fine by me. I do find that trying to eat and drink between races in the new rules canoes a real pain. Still cannot seem to sail it in any weight of wind and reach the drinking bottle! We have managed to pack in 12 IC,s in the past into a 40 footer, so I assum...

Re: Richmond YC XIX World Championships 2014 USA
Hi Del, The new rules scene here in the UK is certainly now off and running. I am expecting a good turn from the UK at the worlds, a full container perhaps?? Now as far as the racing is concerned, I no longer favour several races per day. Perhaps the old day with 2 but certainly no more than that. I...

Re: Ply for models
I have used 0.8mm birch ply, obtained from the local model shop. Easy to get hold of but nearly as expensive as a full size sheet. Its currently £12 for a 1'-0'' x 4'-0'' sheet. Bends very well , I also use 4mmx 4mm square section for the inwhales, a little out of scale .Have fun
Re: Free sex
Having just retired from work by early summer I intend to go abroad this summer. Hopefully to Sweden. German national etc seem like a much better option and cheaper . I've priced up Sweden and the direct ferry cost , for a car x 2 people and a canoe is £1000. Then of course the added cost in Sweden....

Re: Designing DC's
Thanks for all your replies on the speed/scale model issue. I'm not really taking the speed testing too seriously, just going to drop the 1/5 scale model into some fast flowing stream near us , with it tied up . Trying to see if at say 10 knot scale speed it develops some nasty wave form or the roos...

Re: Designing DC's
One more here for the guys keen on physics: If I want to test a model at 1/5 scale moving through the water at a full size speed of 10mph, is the speed not related to scale size , eg 10mph of model is 10mph for full size or is there a sizing down factor? I want to put the model in the local river an...
